PAUL'S FIRST LETTER TO THE THESSALONIANS
SERMON SERIES
February 2018 - May 2018

Many of the letters of the Apostle Paul are written to correct struggling, unhealthy churches. His first letter to the Thessalonians, however, is a letter of encouragement to a very healthy church - a church marked by evangelism, hard work, and brotherly love. This book portrays a model church, still in need of some instruction in Christian living and eschatology, but a church which got the main things right.

Sermons in This Series:

Acts 17:1-10   Healthy Foundations
Benjamin Hatch  |  February 18, 2018

In this sermon we look at the origins of the Thessalonian Church which flourished and persevered despite persecution because its foundation was the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10   Healthy Church
Benjamin Hatch  |  March 4, 2018

We begin our look at 1 Thessalonians by seeing Paul's prayer of thanksgiving for the Thessalonian Church, in which God gives thanks for the Thessalonians because of their conversion, their evangelism, and their steadfast hope in the midst of persecution.

1 Thessalonians 2:1-12   Healthy Leaders
Benjamin Hatch  |  March 11, 2018

We continue our look at 1 Thessalonians by seeing Paul's declaration that his ministry was effective because of his integrity and his activity. We see in this sermon characteristics that should mark Christian leaders and which we should imitate.

1 Thessalonians 2:13-3:13   Healthy Endurance
Benjamin Hatch  |  March 18, 2018

We continue our look at 1 Thessalonians and see Paul's comments on the Thessalonians' endurance of great hardship - persevering in faithfulness to the Lord despite persecution caused by the world and the devil.

1 Thessalonians 4:1-12   Healthy People
Brian Pikkula  |  March 25, 2018

We continue our look at 1 Thessalonians and see Paul's insistence that believers are to live lives of obedience, specifically in this passage, by abstaining from sexual immorality and by willing to work for a living.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18   Healthy Hope
Benjamin Hatch  |  April 8, 2018

We continue our look at 1 Thessalonians and see Paul's response to the crisis in the Thessalonian Church caused by the deaths of church members. In this text, we see the problem of grief, the ground of our hope, the manifestation of our hope, and the result of our hope.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11   Healthy Alertness
Benjamin Hatch  |  April 15, 2018

We continue our look at 1 Thessalonians and see Paul's response to a further doctrinal concern in the Thessalonian Church: when will the Lord avenge evil? In this sermon, we see Paul's answer to when the Day of the Lord will be, what it will be like, and how this truth should impact our lives.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-15   Healthy Congregational Life
April 22, 2018

In this passage, Paul begins to head towards his conclusion by providing specific ways that the members of the local church should encourage and edify one another: by following the leaders, by admonishing the idle, by strengthening the fainthearted, by helping the weak, and by pursuing love for all.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18   Healthy Spirituality in the Will of God
Benjamin Hatch  |  April 29, 2018

In this passage, Paul discloses a part of God's desired will for the local church and for believers - that we should be joyful, prayerful, and thankful.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-28   Healthy Discernment
Benjamin Hatch  |  May 6, 2018

We look at the final verses of Paul's First Letter to the Thessalonians. We particularly focus on Paul's insistence that the church be open to the Holy Spirit, and yet to test alleged activities of the Holy Spirit to ensure that they really come from Him. We see a need to sharpen our own abilities to be discerning.
