Who Leads the Church?
We believe that there is only one head over the church - Jesus Christ. (Matthew 16:18, Ephesians 5:23, Colossians 1:18, 1 Peter 5:4) Although Jesus is presently at the right hand of the Father, we believe that He directs and rules over local churches through the words of the Bible, which are to be obeyed. (1 Timothy 3:15, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21)
Jesus' apostles appointed men to serve in the local church as under-stewards of Christ. These men are referred to in the New Testament as Elders. (Acts 11:30, 14:23, 15:2-23, 20:17, 1 Timothy 3:1-7, 4:14, 5:17, Titus 1:5-9, James 5:14) These Elders are commissioned to direct the spiritual affairs of the church by obeying and implementing God's word.
