IN THE BEGINNING:
GENESIS 1-4 & THE MODERN WORLD

SERMON SERIES
July 2018 - August 2018

We live in a rapidly changing world and a deeply confusing time. Not only is our society plagued by ancient troubles like racism and outbreaks of sudden violence, but we are facing new challenges as questions have arisen concerning the nature of humanity, gender, and marriage. The Bible speaks definitively to the chaos of our society, and does so with great clarity in its earliest chapters, Genesis 1-11.

Sermons in This Series:

Genesis 1:1-2:3   The Supremacy of God
Benjamin Hatch  |  July 15, 2018

The Bible begins with a clear declaration of the supremacy of God and the responsibility of humanity. In this sermon we consider the creative work of God, the orderliness and goodness of God's design, and the nature of humanity: as distinct from the animal world, and reflective of the attributes of God, and yet a creature subject to the authority of God.

Genesis 2:4-25   What Is Humanity?
Benjamin Hatch  |  July 22, 2018

In this sermon we consider the divine design and purpose for humanity. We see that humanity is created as a union of the material and immaterial, humanity is created to work, humanity is created to obey, humanity is created male and female, and humanity is created for community.

Genesis 3:1-24   Disorder: The Anatomy of Sin
Benjamin Hatch  |  July 29, 2018

In this sermon we consider the cause of disorder in our world: the first sin of humanity against God. We consider the righteous rule of God, the rebellion of mankind, and its results. Along the way we see in detail the seductive nature of temptation.

Genesis 4:1-16   Post-Fall Sin
Brian Pikkula  |  August 5, 2018

In this sermon we consider a Biblical response to the rash of mass shootings and celebrity suicides by looking to the first sin recorded after the Fall of Humanity: Cain's murder of his brother Abel. In this sermon we see the inadequacy of Cain's offering, his unrepentant spirit, his sin, and yet the grace of God towards him despite his guilt.
