THE BOOK OF JOSHUA
SERMON SERIES
September 2018 - December 2018

The Book of Joshua is a book that declares the truth that "the righteous will live by faith."  Joshua, its major figure, succeeds Moses as the leader of Israel and is appointed to the enormous task of bringing Israel into the Promised Land. The Lord tells him as he does this that he is to live a life of faith and obedience. In this series we consider Joshua's life as an example of the life the Lord calls us to, we see the warfare of God's people ancient and modern, and we see a powerful example of the Lord's faithfulness to fulfill His word.

Sermons in This Series:

Numbers 13:1-14:45   Fearful Rebellion Fails to Inherit the Promise
Benjamin Hatch  |  September 9, 2018

After 400 years of slavery and two years of being led by God through the wilderness, the Israelites come to the border of the Promised Land. Yet they reject their inheritance because they respond to the promises of God with disbelief rather than the faith that inherits the promise. Do we respond to the opportunities and challenges of life with fear or faith?

Joshua 1:1-9   Be Strong and Courageous
Benjamin Hatch  |  September 16, 2018

After the judgment upon the faithless generation of Kadesh-Barnea has been completed, Israel stands in the midst of two transitions: a transition of leadership and a transition of location. Into this delicate situation, God encourages Joshua by telling him to trust God with the things only God can do, and charges him to live in faith and obedience.

Joshua 1:10-18   Responsibilities in the Body
Benjamin Hatch  |  September 23, 2018

After being emboldened by God, Joshua now begins to act as Israel's leader in two important interactions with his people. In these interactions, we see three responsibilities that leaders have to the congregation, and three responsibilities that members of the congregation has to leaders, and in fact, to one another.

Joshua 2:1-24   By Faith
Benjamin Hatch  |  September 30, 2018

In this sermon we consider the story of Rahab, an unlikely  example of great faith. We see the importance of faith in the Christian life: it overcomes past failures, contextualizes present failures, leads to salvation for anyone, it results in good works and mercy, and produces worship and more faith.

Joshua 3:1-5:1   Facing the Floodwaters
Benjamin Hatch  |  October 7, 2018

The Israelites have come to the Jordan River, which is in its flood stage. The river is an impassible obstacle until God intervenes with a miracle. We today also face impassible obstacles. We are know the Lord permits them, we are to follow the Lord through them, the Lord has power over them, and they advance the Lord's purposes.

Joshua 5:2-15   Be Prepared
Benjamin Hatch  |  October 14, 2018

The Israelites are in the Promised Land. Before the Lord will allow them to begin their campaign, however, He commands them to stop and engage in spiritual preparation. In this sermon we look at five aspects of spiritual preparation Israel faced: the questions of loyalty, obedience, remembrance, trusting the Lord's provision, and humility.

Joshua 6:1-27   The Kindness & Severity of God
Benjamin Hatch  |  October 21, 2018

Israel comes to fight against Jericho. In this sermon we see that God treats His people and unrepentant rebels very differently. In this sermon we see that the Lord gives His obedient people help, the Lord gives unrepentant rebels wrath, and the Lord gives repentant people mercy.

Joshua 7:1-8:29   Sin Inside & Outside the Camp
Benjamin Hatch  |  October 28, 2018

Israel suffers defeat against the city of Ai because there is sin among the Israelites. In this sermon we see the results of sin among God's people, the right response to sin among God's people, the judgment of sin among God's people, the results of repentance among God's people, and the judgment of sin outside God's people.

Joshua 8:30-9:27   Decision-Making In a Time of Deception
Benjamin Hatch  |  November 4, 2018

Israel undergoes both an important religious ceremony and a terrible experience in which they were defrauded. We see in these incidents that God’s people should seek to fully obey the Lord, that God’s people should consult the Lord about decisions, and that the Lord can redeem our bad decisions for His good purposes.

Joshua 10:1-12:24   The Believer's Warfare
Benjamin Hatch  |  November 11, 2018

Israel defeats the major remaining Canaanite forces in a series of battles. In this sermon we examine the Israelites' warfare against the Canaanites and compare and contrast it to the believer's warfare today against the enemies of the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Joshua 13:1-21:45   The Believer's Inheritance
Benjamin Hatch  |  November 18, 2018

After 7 years of warfare, Israel has completed phase one of the conquest. Joshua now distributes the land to the tribes so that they can take their inheritance and finish the war with the Canaanites. In this sermon we compare Israel's inheritance in the land with the believer's inheritance as it is described in the New Testament.

Joshua 22:1-34 - Unity or Division?
Benjamin Hatch  |  December 2, 2018

After Joshua's retirement, difficulties begin among the Israelites. Questions about the loyalty of the tribes east of the Jordan to the Lord emerge. In this sermon we see the basis, the threat, the defense, and the results of the unity of the people of God and are encouraged to be eager to maintain our unity as a church.

Joshua 23:1-16 - Faithfulness and the Lord's People
Brian Pikkula  |  December 9, 2018

Over time, the Israelites have failed to deal with the Canaanites as the Lord commanded them to do. Therefore, Joshua emerges from retirement to exhort the people to consider the Lord's past faithfulness, to live faithful lives in response, and if they do not, to realize the Lord will be faithful in bringing judgment as He was in giving them the Land.
This sermon was not recorded.

Joshua 24:1-31 - The Right Response to Remembrance
Benjamin Hatch  |  December 16, 2018

Joshua's life draws to a close. Joshua assembles Israel and calls for them to make a decision about the growing idolatry that has characterized them since his retirement. In this sermon, we see the need to remember the Lord's faithfulness, the right response to remembering the Lord's faithfulness, and the need to rehearse the Lord's faithfulness.
