THE BOOK OF JUDGES
SERMON SERIES
January 2019 - April 2019

In this continuation of the narrative begun in the Book of Joshua, we see again the critical truth that God's people are to be characterized by faith and obedience. This book, unlike Joshua, presents this truth negatively, showing us the terrible consequences that ensue when people refuse to believe God and refuse to follow His word - a spiral out of control into increasing moral anarchy and depravity.

Sermons in This Series:

Judges 1:1-2:5   Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory
Benjamin Hatch  |  January 13, 2019

After Joshua's death, the tribes of Israel failed to destroy the Canaanites and permitted the Canaanites to live and practice their idolatry among them. In this chapter we see that faith and obedience result in success in the mission God calls us to, we see what disobedience looks like, and the consequences of disobedience to God's mission.

Judges 2:6-3:11   Spiraling Out of Control
Benjamin Hatch  |  January 20, 2019

Israel after Joshua plummets into a repetitious spiral of failure, chasing idols, being delivered by God's grace, and returning into sin. In this sermon we see the results of a spiritually unprepared generation rising to leadership, the effects of sin left unchecked, and God's gracious deliverance despite Israel's sin in providing Israel's first judge, Othniel.

Judges 3:12-31   The God of the Surprise
Benjamin Hatch  |  January 27, 2019

After Othniel dies, the next generation goes further into sin than their wicked parents had. God again raises up two unlikely deliverers: Ehud, a morally gray figure, and the enigmatic Shamgar. Yet in this sermon we see God's power and willingness to use weak, unlikely vessels to accomplish surprising outcomes that result in His glory.

Judges 4:1-24   When Leaders Don't Lead
Brian Pikkula  |  February 3, 2019

After Ehud dies, the next generation continues its spiral into sin. Again, God uses unlikely deliverers - the prophetess Deborah, the cowardly leader Barak, and the deceptive Jael to destroy Israel's enemies and bring peace to the people. We then receive from this text an encouragement to male spiritual leadership in the family and more broadly.

Judges 5:1-31   When God Goes to War
Benjamin Hatch  |  February 10, 2019

After the victory of Deborah and Barak, they sing a song of praise to the Lord. In this sermon, we see in this song that the Lord uses imperfect means to generate good outcomes, the Lord is a warrior involved in His people's lives, the Lord's strategy is to use His people as leaders and followers, and the Lord is triumphant at war.

Judges 6:1-7:22   From Fear to Faith
February 17, 2019

The Author of Judges begins to relate the story of the descent of the northern and eastern tribes of Israel. He begins with Gideon, a man who God grew from being a coward, endlessly doubting God, to a warrior who had to fight against the longest odds in the Bible purely on faith and was given the most surprising military victory in the entire Bible.

Judges 7:23-8:32   How Not to Respond to God's Goodness
Benjamin Hatch  |  March 3, 2019

We continue with the account of the life of Gideon and see how Gideon fell from being a man of faith into becoming a man of folly, as Gideon begins to act like Israel's king and leads the nation into idolatry. He foolishly responds to the goodness of God in his life with a trio of terrible responses: grumbling, selfishness, and arrogance.

Judges 8:33-10:5   A Tainted Legacy & A Faithful God
Rodrick Sweet  |  March 10, 2019

After Gideon dies, his son Abimelech conspires to become king over God's people and becomes the means by which God judged Israel's idolatry. Abimelech reveals the tainted legacy of Gideon as he descends into conspiracy, mass-murder, and ultimately leads Israel into civil war. Yet, God faithfully delivers His people and judges Abimelech's evil.

Judges 10:6-12:15   Worldliness Among God's People
Benjamin Hatch  |  March 17, 2019

Israel reaches the depths of its descent into evil. Israel tries to deliver itself from God's judgment by appointing Jephthah, a crime boss, as their leader. This text depicts what worldliness is, the ways that worldliness threaten God's people (by offering false depictions of repentance, family, leadership, and God), and the destructive results of worldliness.

Judges 13:1-15:8   God's Responses to the Evils of the Flesh
Benjamin Hatch  |  March 24, 2019

While Israel has hit rock bottom morally, lost in sin and unwilling to enjoy repentance or deliverance, God offers a solution by sending a specially empowered person with a mission: Samson. Unfortunately, Samson is totally dominated by the flesh, but God is able to use Samson's folly to bring about His good purposes.

Judges 15:9-16:31   The Ugly, the Bad & the Good
Blaine Hooper  |  March 31, 2019

Israel, lost under the domination of their own sin and the Philistines, attempts to reject God's deliverance in the person of Samson. Samson kills many Philistines, but is unwilling to kill his own sin and winds up in a terrible position. Yet, Samson turns back to the Lord at the end of his life and shows us there is Gospel hope in the midst of the darkest times.

Judges 17:1-18:31   Evil Associations Will Corrupt You
Thomas Wheeler  |  April 7, 2019

The Author of Judges begins to conclude the book and depicts a story from the early days of the Judges revealing the extent of Israel's corruption among the common people. We see in this passage a family, and a tribe of Israel, with no knowledge of the word of God, and we see the calamity that ensues.

Judges 19:1-21:25   Depravity
Benjamin Hatch  |  April 14, 2019

We conclude this series by looking at one of the most shocking passages in the Bible depicting the depravity that existed among God's people when they refused to live in obedience to God's word and did what was right in their own eyes. We see the cause of evil, the manifestations of evil, the results of evil, the incorrect response to evil, and the correct response to evil.
